Capability Development

Building a project management capability within an organisation is becoming increasingly important as businesses strive to increase the rate of return on what seems like continually reducing investment. Unfortunately, standard or ‘off-the-shelf’ project management training packages often fail to deliver the anticipated benefits. PM Capability Development needs to be structured around providing the insights, tools, techniques and case studies, but more importantly, it must also include practical and powerful coaching, mentoring and delivery methods.

PIPC Approach

By raising Project and Programme Management Capability, businesses will more successfully:
  • prioritise projects for strategic advantage
  • lead projects and enable the full realisation of possible benefits
  • increase the rate of return of projects
  • build lasting relationships with customers, shareholders and other stakeholders
  • communicate the ongoing value of projects within the corporate economic context
  • reap process, productivity and profitability improvements across the organisation
  • retain key project management skills within the organisation.

The Project Management Capability Development plan must continually focus an organisation on improving its capability. This will assess the organisation’s current capability, determine the target level and map out a plan for achieving this – including the measurement of ongoing benefits.

To help consistently map an organisation’s Project Management Capability, we have developed a Project Management Maturity Model (PM3). An integral part of this is the development of processes to efficiently build and enhance an organisation’s Project Management Capability, along with the implementation of any lacking project management components.

Our approach to improving Project Management Capability focuses on delivering value to the organisation against a set of key performance indicators. The approach is of primary benefit to any organisation that faces any of the following issues:

  • a history of not achieving project objectives
  • failing to deliver projects and tasks within time and cost constraints
  • key project management and technical resources are regularly overloaded
  • projects which have stopped or just run-out of steam
  • the dynamics of the business are forcing increasing project complexity
  • not enough competent project managers.
